Functional Skills Tutor

The role is a hands-on, highly visible position designed to impact on a broad range of clients' English, maths and ICT outcomes. The person in this role will be instrumental not only in making a difference to the lives of learners but also in increasing the functional skills pass rates for the teams they support. Qualification delivery will include Entry level 2/3- level 1 and level 2 English, Maths and ICT.

The role of the functional skills tutor is to ensure the company delivers an efficient and effective English, maths and ICT offer to learners and employers by:

  1. ensuring operational teams utilise the most current teaching and assessment techniques in relation to English, maths and ICT delivery;

  2. leading, and providing technical functional skills support to operational teams and working closely with the quality and development team to ensure delivery practices are aligned to assessment and quality assurance requirements;

  3. championing the correct use of diagnostic tools in order to identify suitable and efficient functional skills learning solutions;

  4. providing additional learning support for entry level learners or learners that have experienced high levels of challenge with passing functional skills tests through the offer of 1:1 coaching and classroom delivery

A secondary and important aspect of the role is to support and augment the functional skills delivery of Training Consultants


Typical deliverables (this list is not exhaustive and you are expected to undertake any reasonable activity suited to your qualifications and experience)

  • Marketing the benefits of functional skills attainments to learners, employers and company staff

  • Providing information, advice and guidance in respect of the company English and Maths offer and recommending suitable alternatives for learners who have entry 1 and low entry level 2 initial assessment results

  • Providing additional learning support in line with SFA funding requirements and company guidelines, ensuring that all such support is recorded and claimed for

  • Coaching learners who require additional learning support and training interventions to achieve positive test results

  • Completing and maintaining all regulatory and financial paperwork as required within the job role

  • Delivering outstanding teaching and learning of knowledge across all functional skill components

  • Mentoring and coaching learners where diagnostic results or practice test results or fail rates determine specialist teaching is required

  • Taking part in continuous professional development, including completion of own qualifications where required

  • Liaising regularly with your line manager and quality assurance team and providing TCs where

  • To work with learners as directed by your line manager

  • To tutor, mentor, assess and support learners undertaking Functional Skills, as part of either an apprenticeship programme/standalone course, to an agreed timeframe; making use of agreed resources and adapting delivery to the needs of the individual learner

  • To support team members to enable them to achieve their targets

  • To deliver workshops to promote the Functional Skills development of learners and company staff

  • To book, administer and invigilate examinations when required

  • To attend company meetings as required within region and with the functional skills technical lead

  • To act as a subject specialist for any member of the organisation requiring support or advice on Functional Skills

  • To accurately record learners’ progress in line with the company’s review procedure to closely monitor progression and achievement

  • To support the design and review of resources and to share resources within the functional skills team

  • To complete remote functional skills sessions with learners where face-to-face contact is not possible


  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with delivering English and Maths in a vocational (work-based learning) setting

  • Experience of organising own schedules ad working to targets

  • Experience of delivering on a 1:1 basis and to groups of learners

  • Excellent practical and theoretical knowledge of English and Maths delivery

  • Industry specific qualifications- to support embedding and contextualising of English and Maths

  • Assessing and/or teaching qualifications – as a minimum TAQA and Preparing to teach qualification at level 4, desirable level 4 /5 teaching qualifications

  • Experience of working with learners who require additional learning support

  • Knowledge of apprenticeship and traineeship programmes​

  • Good IT skills – working level of knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and other MIS and databases

Your performance will be measured on the outcome of your activities, quality of delivery and your contribution to the success of our business. You will have regular meetings with your Manager to discuss specific priorities and deliverables and to receive feedback.
