Jody Munn - Unit Catering Manager at Hermitage Primary School (Taylor Shaw), Uxbridge

When Catering Assistant, Jody Munn began studying towards her English and maths functional skills qualifications in 2014, little did she know that she would be completing two apprenticeships and achieving three promotions within three years.

In October 2014 Jody was working for a catering company at an infant school where she was offered the chance to study towards level two functional skills qualifications in English and maths. “They were really committed to the development of their staff and their training partner was HIT Training” explained Jody. “It seemed a great opportunity to gain more confidence in myself and my role.” Once Jody had completed the functional skills, she enrolled onto the food production and cooking intermediate apprenticeship with a view to progressing on to an advanced management apprenticeship.  

By completing the apprenticeships, Jody has rapidly progressed up the career ladder. “I started out as Catering Assistant when I took the job at the infant school. I was then promoted to Assistant Cook while I was concluding the food production apprenticeship and as soon as I achieved it I knew I wanted to go onto the Hospitality, Supervision and Leadership (HSL) advanced apprenticeship with HIT.  Soon after I had started, I was promoted again to Assistant Manager!”

Jody feels she has gained so much from completing the apprenticeships. “I’ve learnt so many new skills and I make sure that I apply everything I learn to my job. I am much more of a practical learner than an academic. After finding out about HIT Training and that I could learn while working and earning a living I knew the course would be perfect for me.” Being able to fit the course around work and home life was also a great benefit for Jody.

In March 2016 Jody applied for a new role with catering company Taylor Shaw at Hermitage Primary School. “I was part way through my HSL apprenticeship when I decided to apply for the job as Unit Manager with Taylor Shaw,” said Jody. “I wanted to continue the development of my management skills whilst furthering my career. It was great that I was able to resume my apprenticeship with my HIT Trainer in my new role.” Taylor Shaw is part of the Waterfall Catering Group and is committed to ensuring their staff have the best opportunities to achieve their potential. “I was voted Employee of the Month after only being Unit Manager for two months!” beamed Jody.

By demonstrating her new skills every day, Jody leads her team and organisation, taking initiative, decision making and motivating others. “My HIT trainer Edward has been a great help every step of the way and I feel I have so much support from him from start to finish. He always responds to me rapidly and makes me laugh too which makes the day go better!”

Speaking about her career journey and progression through her apprenticeships, Jody’s trainer Edward Demosthenous commented, “Jody took a very proactive approach to learning from prior to our first enrolment day and has not looked back since; continuing to be proactive, motivated and very positive throughout all of her training. This attitude has made delivery of learning an absolute pleasure; so definitely a big thank you from myself to Jody.”
