Kate Marklew, Supervisor at The View, Stratford-upon-Avon

When Kate Marklew started working as a waitress at The View, a Fish and Chip restaurant in Stratford-upon-Avon in June 2014, she had no idea that within two years she would be progressing to managerial level. 

Kate previously completed a Business Administration Apprenticeship and was aware that having a recognised qualification to match her experience would assist her career. She was very happy to be given the opportunity to complete the Food and Beverage Service Intermediate Apprenticeship with HIT Training while working at The View. “I wanted to gain a better understanding of the Food and Beverage role I was in and the legislation surrounding the industry,” commented Kate. “By doing this apprenticeship, I know what to consider when problem solving and how to guide newer members of staff.”

In October 2014, Kate was promoted to Supervisor. She is now responsible for training new starters, running the day shifts and supporting the managers. Through her training, Kate feels she is more confident at suggesting solutions and following them through. Despite having many out of work commitments and challenges whilst completing her course and working full time, Kate’s determination and positive attitude has overcome these challenges and she is now considering training to be a team leader.

The owner, Carl Harrison has supported apprenticeships since The View opened and has always encouraged his staff to complete training. Carl said, “We are really happy with Kate’s progress during her time here at The View and we are looking to progress her further. As soon as she is more settled with her out of work commitments we would like to promote her to Manager and tie this in with the Team Leading Apprenticeship.

Kate said, “I’m looking forward to my future with The View. Carl is so supportive of my training and development. The apprenticeship programme with HIT really fits in with my working hours and my personal life, and I get on really well with my Assessor.  It has been a great experience all round.


It was great speaking to our account manager, Catherine, this afternoon and great to hear that HIT are being so supportive with our apprentices, I found the call very positive in a time of crisis, so thank you.

The Learner’s leaflet is great and being sent out to Apprentices and Line Managers following our communication last week providing a great follow up.
