If you run a retail business, you need to know that the people you employ have the skills you need to be successful. A retail apprenticeship programme is an ideal way to build a talent pipeline. Whether you require retail store apprenticeships, retail management apprenticeships or team leader apprenticeships, HIT Training offers courses at every level to ensure that your team can grow.
So why should you invest in a retail apprenticeship programme? To put it simply: because your competitors already are. In the ultra-competitive retail store sector, customer satisfaction is key. You need a team with the customer service skills required to build brand trust, and ultimately brand loyalty. These are the factors which increase profitability over time, and by offering retail apprenticeships, you can jump to the front of the customer service queue.
A retail apprenticeship programme is also a great way to attract and retain the best people to work in your stores. Forget bored teenagers who’d rather be anywhere else; by offering a retail apprenticeship, you’ll be employing people who really want to take that first step on a longer career in the retail sector. Create your own talent pathway, with successful apprentices moving on to team leader or management positions within your business.
Apprenticeships combine hands-on experience with structured learning, giving retail apprentices the chance to gain practical skills while studying toward a recognised qualification. In the retail sector, apprentices are trained in-store by experienced team members, helping them develop essential knowledge and workplace behaviours.
Retail apprentices will also learn through classroom sessions or online modules. They will be assessed on what they have learned throughout the programme. At the conclusion of their training, apprentices undergo a final evaluation known as the ‘end-point assessment’, which determines whether they achieve a pass, merit, or distinction.
Retail apprenticeships are available at various levels – from level 2 (comparable to five GCSEs) right up to degree-level and master’s equivalent programmes.
If you’re considering bringing apprentices into your team, it’s also worth exploring the financial support options available. Government funding is available for eligible employers, with contributions varying depending on business size. A retailer plays a crucial role in the retail sector – stocking stores, providing customer advice and great customer service. They are the face of a retail business, and therefore it’s crucial that they are able to interact positively with customers and display the knowledge that shoppers expect. This level 2 apprenticeship is a great entry into the retail sector. Businesses offering this apprenticeship can specialise (for example by specifically offering a fashion retailer apprenticeship).
A team leader needs excellent communication skills, as well as the knowledge and behaviours to implement best practice and business culture. This level 3 apprenticeship, which takes 14 months to complete, will teach retail apprentices the skills they need to inspire their team to success.
This 15-month, level 4 apprenticeship is tailored for individuals in management positions in the retail sector. The Retail Manager Apprenticeship teaches the skills needed to manage staff, optimise sales and lead a team to achieve business objectives.

An apprenticeship is a real job with training. Apprentices earn while they learn – gaining hands-on experience at work, plus structured training (in person or online) to build their knowledge.
At the end, they gain a nationally recognised qualification and the skills to thrive in a role within their chosen sector.
A person is eligible for an apprenticeship if they:
The level they start at depends on qualifications, the role, and the employer’s chosen apprenticeship standard.
As of April 2025 apprentices earn at least:
Many employers pay more than the minimum: the average apprentice pay is around £8.00/hour. Pay can vary by industry, location, and experience.
An End-Point Assessment (EPA) will take place at the end of at the end of an apprenticeship programme. This tests what the apprentice has learned—their knowledge, skills, and behaviours. Most apprenticeships are graded pass, merit, or distinction.
An employer or training provider must make reasonable adjustments to accommodate additional needs – as with any other job role.
