I’ve been dying for the chance to start an apprenticeship after finding out about them through conversations with my colleagues. The idea of gaining a qualification, improving myself and earning money at the same time added that extra spark to my interest!
I have supervised all front of house at the Lambton Worm pub and hotel since 2017, being promoted to Duty Manager in 2019. I had a real desire to learn more practical skills to further my career, however, due to the demands of my role, this needed to be at my own pace. So I jumped at the chance to start a Level 2 Hospitality Team Member Apprenticeship!
My apprenticeship helped me overcome adversity and bring the best out of me. The reason for starting my apprenticeship came from a place most dear to my heart. In 2019, I became a proud father for the first time and this was a big driver for me to gain full-time employment to support my daughter. An apprenticeship offered me the perfect opportunity to earn a living, kickstart my career and secure a comfortable future for me and my family.
The time spent completing my Apprenticeship has been one of the most inspiring periods of my life. Not only was I able to find my true passion in cooking, but I’ve learnt how to continue to be inspired in my job which I believe is the most important skill to have as a chef.
The apprenticeship’s multi-disciplinary programme offers an overview of the facilities management sector, providing information about both soft services (building security, catering and cleaning) and hard services (fire safety systems, heating and plumbing).
With the benefit of learning, my technical knowledge of building services increased and enabled me to take on extra responsibilities like issuing health and safety work permits and facilities management projects. The skills I acquired have dramatically helped me to grow as an individual.
It’s a great way of learning while earning money, which is what people need these days. Getting skills practically and on paper. By the end of the apprenticeship, I’ll be well-versed and ready to go!
Since launching, the Academy has gone from strength-to-strength and provides paid training places for young people from the local area who are keen to pursue a career in the industry
I feel as though I have increased understanding of hospitality. I’m beginning to delve deeper into the legislation and laws that surround the industry meaning I am carrying out my job in a safe and professional way.
My apprenticeships not only gave me the qualifications to progress in my career, but they really boosted my confidence and gave me an amazing chance to develop my long term career prospects.
I have gained a huge amount of experience, not just in how to be a chef but in time management, handling responsibility in the kitchen and organising my work load.
If someone had told me at the start of my career that I’d be in a supervisor position within three years, I wouldn’t have believed them.

Completing the apprenticeship meant going the extra mile to improve myself, so I could progress further within the company. I feel that I am much calmer as a result and that I cope better in leading the team.

The apprenticeships are such an amazing route to take if you are thinking about a career as a chef. They teach you so much and give you that extra confidence boost when you receive your completion certificates.

My apprenticeships have been invaluable in helping to build my career as a chef, although I had received brilliant training from the chefs at my first job, the apprenticeship has opened so many doors for me and allowed me to be the best chef I can be.
