Talia May Hearn – Hospitality Team Member at Shepherd Neame

“Each stage of my apprenticeship journey has supported my development, and I can see how continuing to learn has had a positive impact ”

Why an apprenticeship?

I currently work as a Hospitality Team Member at Shepherd Neame, where I support the day-to-day running of the pub by setting up for service, serving food and drinks, and closing in line with company guidelines. Over the time I’ve been with the business, I’ve continued to grow in confidence and develop my skills within the role.

Apprenticeships have been a key part of that journey. Firsty I completed the level 2 Hospitality Team Member apprenticeship followed by the Level 3 Hospitality Supervisor apprenticeship, and I am now working towards my third apprenticeships which is the Customer Service Specialist.

For me, progressing through multiple apprenticeships has shown that learning doesn’t stop once one programme finishes. Each apprenticeship has built on the last, helping me develop new skills, gain confidence, and deepen my understanding of the industry. It has opened my eyes to the opportunities available and shown me that there is a clear pathway to continue progressing and building a long-term career in hospitality.

Benefitting my business

Through completing multiple apprenticeships, I have developed a wide range of skills that I use every day in my role. I have gained a stronger understanding of hospitality and the different roles within the industry, which has helped me see how I can continue to grow and contribute to the business.

My confidence has increased, particularly when working with customers and as part of a team. I have built my knowledge of food, wine, and customer service, which I apply day-to-day to deliver a better experience for guests. Working with a variety of people has also helped me develop my communication skills and adapt to different situations.

Each stage of my apprenticeship journey has supported my development, and I can see how continuing to learn has had a positive impact not only on my own confidence, but also on the way I contribute to the team and the overall customer experience.

The HIT Training Difference

My experience with HIT Training and my trainer has been very positive. I have received great support throughout my apprenticeship journey, which has helped me stay motivated and continue progressing.

The course includes a mix of coursework, off-the-job training, practical observation, a work-based project, and professional discussion. I have particularly enjoyed gaining new experiences and working with others across the company, which has helped me learn from different perspectives and continue developing my skills.

One of the things I find most inspiring is Shepherd Neame’s dedication to learning and its staff. Having the opportunity to progress through multiple apprenticeships has made a real difference to my confidence and has shown me that there is always a next step to work towards.

Looking ahead, I would like to develop further within the business, particularly focusing on the events and operations side. I see my apprenticeship journey as an important part of helping me achieve that, and I’m excited to continue learning and progressing in my career.
