What is the apprentice Initial Assessment and Skills Scan?

An apprenticeship initial assessment and skills scan is an evaluation that is conducted at the beginning of an apprenticeship programme to determine an individual's current skills, knowledge, and understanding of the subject matter as well as a check of an individual's maths and English skills.

The assessment helps to establish a baseline for the apprentice’s existing abilities and knowledge and identifies areas where they may need additional support.

The purpose of an initial assessment and skills scan is to ensure that the apprentice is placed on the appropriate level of the apprenticeship programme and provided with the appropriate training and support to achieve their learning goals. It may involve various methods of assessment, such as an interview, a written test, an online diagnostic or a combination of the three.

The assessment process may also identify any additional support needs an apprentice may have, such as dyslexia, English as a second language, or other learning difficulties. This information can then be used to tailor the training and support provided to the apprentice to ensure that they have the best chance of success in their apprenticeship.

The initial assessment is carried out by the training provider in collaboration with the apprentice. The results of the assessment are used to develop a training plan that outlines the specific training and support that the apprentice will receive during their apprenticeship. The training plan is reviewed and updated regularly throughout the apprenticeship to ensure that the apprentice is progressing towards their learning goals.
